Lipid peroxides and their relatives in organs of female rats fed diets containing excessive heme iron

Increases in lipid peroxide and injury in organs of female rats fed excess iron preparations were investigated. An enzyme-treated heme iron preparation (HIP) and ferric citrate (FC) were used as sources of iron. Twenty-four rats were divided into four groups: FC-normal group, FC-overload group, HIP-normal groups and HIP-overload group. Every group showed a significant correlation between from content and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) in the liver, kidney and lungs. The HIP-overload group showed a higher TBARS level than the FC-overload group in spite of the lower iron content of the liver. Excess HIP administration induced an increase of aniline hydroxylase activity in liver microsomes. These results suggest that excess HIP promotes not only non-enzymatic but also enzymatic peroxidation in the liver
