Study on control of fruit drop of rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei), 2: The effect of foliar-applied fertilizers on fruit growth and chlorophyll contents of leaves under severe condition

Applications of foliar fertilizers, Hitac and San-eirip, were evaluated to improve fruit quality after GA3 application to increase fruit setting. Under severe condition such as transplanted in the same spring about two months before flowering, fruit set of non-treated control of 'Homebell' was 65.9% on July 1 (50 days after GA3 first treatment). GA3, San-eirip and Hitac after the first GA3 treatment applied increased slightly fruit set to 69.1%, 71.7% and 73.2%. Fruit set of non-treated control of 'Tifblue' was 66.7% on July 1. GA3 50 ppm applied alone and the second GA3 after GA3 treatment applied showed fruit set of 70.0% and 70.1%, also slight improvement over control San-eirip and Hitac after GA3 treatment applied increased fruit set to 71.4% and 76.8%, respectively. GA3 tre atment did not affect the size of the fruits of 'Homebell'. But San-eirip application on the GA3-treated fruits slightly increased the fruit size although delayed the coloration. Hitac application on GA3-treated fruit slightly hastened coloration compared with control and GA3-alone-treatment. San-eirip or Hitac on GA3-treated trees exerted similar effect on fruit quality of 'Homebell'. San-eirip and Hitac clearly increased the chlorophyll contents both 'Homebell' and 'Tifblue' during the 7th to 28th day after the treatment. Although the increase of a chlorophyll content may not directly improve quality of fruits of rabbiteye blueberries, San-eirip and Hitac treatments after GA3 application, were considered to be a possibility for a production of high quality fruits
