Effect of carp and aigamo duck setting on growth, yield, and root system of paddy rice, one case study at Hakusui village of Aso district in Kumamoto prefecture [Japan]

Agricultural practice for weed control by around 500 black carps setting without feeding per 1000 square-meter in rice growing paddy field has been spreading at mountainous Aso district since 1996. In 1998, this practice gained 30ha conducting by 60 farmers. There is a prominent farmer who has been trying to conduct rice cultivation under organic farming system with no chemicals and environmentally-friendly farming with only herbicide and without insecticides and fungicides at Hakusui village at Aso district in Kumamoto prefecture. Effect of carp and aigamo duck setting on growth, yield, Mg and K content in brown rice and shape of the root system and number of adventitious roots of rice cv. Koshihikari were surveyed in comparison with conventional farming only applied herbicide instead of carp and aigamo-duck. Weed growth was entirely depressed by carp and aigamo-duck setting. Carp setting improved tillering and aigamo-duck setting could maintain higher chlorophyll content in leaf blade until the later growth stage than the conventional. Grain yield in three paddy fields attained 600kg/10a that was much higher than the average at Hakusui village regardless of weeding methods. The shape of the root system of carp setting seemed to be more larger than those in another weeding fields. The rate of root-tip injured adventitious roots was higher the conventional, aigamo-duck setting and carp setting in order. Carp setting would be more convenient and labor saving practice for weed control in the paddy filed and look promising for conducting organic farming
