One way of approaching the problem of improving agricultural productivity is to examine whether the present pattern of ownership and use of resources are efficient or not. A total of 87 farmers categorized as Owner, Owner-tenant and Pure-tenant were selected from an irrigation system to understand the effects of tenancy on paddy production. The study revealed that human labor and animal power use were uneconomic and that fertilizer was the most important contributory input influencing yield. Manure and pesticides were other inputs affecting output. The pure tenant farms were reaping higher gross return as well as net return from paddy and hence they were observed to be more efficient in the area under study. On the basis of average yield and profitability it can be concluded that pure-tenant farms were optimum
