Effects of calcium compounds, calcium-competitive inhibitors, lime sulfur and abscisic acid on incidence of 'Kohansho' disorder in 'Shirayanagi' navel orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck var. brasiliensis Tanaka) fruit

The occurrence of Kohansho disorder in Shirayanagi navel orange fruit as affected by application of calcium compounds, calcium-competitive inhibitors, lime sulfur and abscisic acid (ABA) was investigated. Dipping fruit six times on the trees in the CaCl2 solution from October 28 to November 17 prevented disorder development during post-harvest storage. However rather promotive effect was noted in the following year by similar treatment of the same solution one, two and five times. Dipping harvested fruit in a solution of LaCl3, a calcium-competitive inhibitor, slightly prevented symptom development at 1 mM but not a 100 mM. Other calcium-competitive inhibitors such as BAPTA and GEDTA seemed to promote the disorder, whereas calcium ionophore and BAPTA-AM had little effect. Post-harvest dipping of CaCl2, CaCO3, Ca(CH3COO)2 or Ca(NO3)2 solution produced no apparent promotive nor preventive effects. Neither preventive effect was found by post-harvest dipping of ABA solution (50 and 200 ppm). However, spray of lime sulfur on the whole trees slightly reduced symptom development during storage. Repeated dipping in CaCl2, Ca(NO3)2 and LaCl3 solution slightly increased rind Ca content. No chemicals affected rind coloration
