Inoculation test for resistance to southern corn rust under spring-planting conditions

Southern corn rust, caused by Puccinia polysora Underw., seldom occurs under spring-planting conditions, but often attacks severely late-planting silage corn (Zea mays L.) in the warm region of Japan. However, since its occurrence varies from year to year, several years are required to evaluate conclusively the resistance of breeding materials to the rust. This study was carried out to develop a method for testing the resistance to rust by inoculation under spring-planting conditions. In the inoculation test, seeds wee planted from early to mid-April in the isolated field, and 0.5 ml of suspension with 4000 uredospores per ml was sprayed on a plant in early June. During the winter season, the collection of uredospores was maintained by clonal propagation on seedlings of the susceptible hybrid in a glasshouse. The overall results indicate that the resistance of breeding materials to southern corn rust can be evaluated effectively by inoculation test under spring-planting conditions
