Changes in the nitrate content of millets [Echinochloa] and sudangrass [Sorghum arundinaceum]

We examined the change of the nitrate-N content of millet and sudangrass, which were adapted to e cultivated in upland converted paddy fields, during their growth. We also investigated the decrease of nitrate-N content in the silage made from sudangrass. Before heading, the nitrate-N content in both millets and sudangrass was above 0.2%, the threshold of nitrate poisoning. While this decreased below 0.1% after heading, the stems of the first cuttings had high contents of nitrate-N and their ratio to total nitrate-N content were above 90% as means of the whole sudangrass plant. The ratio of leaves and stems in total nitrate-N contents were about three to seven in the first cutting of millets and the second cutting of sudangrass. Their leaf ratios in total dry matter were higher than the first cutting of sudangrass. The nitrate-N content in the silage made from the first cutting of sudangrass decreased below 0.05% about a month after ensiling. This suggests that the ensiling is useful is reducing the nitrate-N content in forage crops
