Numerical estimation of mechanical and structural properties of soil based on the fundamental physical properties

Using 36 soil samples in Kagawa prefecture, author studied on the applicability of measured value of fundamental physical properties of soil to estimate unknown mechanical and structural properties. Multiple regression analysis, using 10 factors of fundamental physical properties of soil as the predictor variables, and both 6 factors of soil mechanical properties and 9 factors of soil structural properties as the criterion variables, shows the following results. 1) Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content can be estimated at 0.1% level by factors concerned with soil consistency. 2) Internal friction coefficient, cohesion and unconfined compressive strength of soil can be estimated at 1% level by factors concerned with soil gradation. 3) pF-moisture characteristics can be estimated at 1% level by two variables among three; thats are sand friction, liquid limit and plasticity index. 4) Each maximum dry density and effective soil moisture are interpreted graphically on plasticity chart and triangular soil classification chart, respectively. 5) All mechanical properties except shear strength, and all structural properties except highly decomposable organic matter can be estimated numerically by fundamental physical properties of soil
