Ecology and chemical control of the potato [Solanum tuberosum] cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis in Nagasaki prefecture [Japan]

The seasonal prevalence of the potato cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis (Woll.) Mulvey and Stone, and the effect of nematicides on the nematode were studied at double cropping fields of potato in Nagasaki prefecture. 1) In spring cropping using black mulching, this nematode took one generation. The number of second stage larvae in the soil reached a peak in mid-late April, and increased again at the time of harvesting in mid June. 2) In spring and autumn cropping without mulching, this nematode took one generation. The number of second stage larvae in the soil reached a peak in early May or early October, and did not increase again. 3) In double cropping fields,this nematode took two generations a year. 4) The number of cysts in the soil increased during the cropping season of potato, whilst the number of eggs in the soil decreased with the hatching of second stage larvae and subsequently increased with the appearance of new cysts. However the numbers of cysts and eggs remained almost unchanged during the non-cropping season. 5) The emergence of second stage larvae appeared during the cropping season of potato, but did not in the non-cropping season. 6) It took about one month for second stage larvae to become new cysts after penetration into the root. During this period, they required about 600 day-degrees of accumulated temperature. 7) In the paddy rice-potato rotational fields, the in habitation of this nematode could not be confirmed. 8) The successive soil treatment of nematicides in the double cropping field of potato was effective against this nematode, but this treatment was not able to eliminate the nematode completely from the field
