Growth and yield of paddy rice under exceptional weather conditions in 1993 and 1994 were compared and examined. In 1993, the temperature was low and the sunshine hour was short over the whole of the growing period of paddy rice, so that the growth of paddy rice was poor. However, the yield was 4% more than in the average year, because the number of productive panicles were more, and the percentage of ripened grains was higher than average. On the other hand, in 1994, the temperature was high and the sunshine hour was long over the whole of growing period of paddy rice, so that the plant height became tall and the number of tillers increased greatly. The yield was 21% more than in the average year, because many productive panicles were achieved though the percentage of productive tillers was low. It was guessed that good ripening was a main cause that the yield of paddy rice in 1993 was above average in spite of the bad weather condition
