Changes of polyamine, ACC contents and EFE activity in the peel and pulp of Japanese pear [Pyrus pyrifolia] fruits during a postharvest period

The two cultivars of Japanese pears (Pyrus serotina REHDER) were studied in this research; one showed a large peak of ethylene production 9 days after a harvest (Kikusui), and the other had only a small peak of etylene production 8 days after a harvest (Nijisseiki). Otherwise, the rate of ethylene production was closely connected with the activity of ethyleneforming enzyme (EFE), the content of 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylicacid (ACC) and polyamine metabolism. It is also found that fruit pulp consistently showed greater EFE activity than the peel, but there was no clear difference in ACC contents between them. Among the three kinds of polyamines, putrescine (put), spermidine (spd) and spermine (spe), which were contained in par fruits, putrescine and spermidine were the major polyamines found during a postharvest period in both cultivars. Before peak of ethylene production, there were clear differences in the changing pattern of polyamine contents between the pulp and peel of the two cultivars. It seems that high putrescine content and low spermidine content were related to the low rate of ethylene production
