Vitaminic response of the silkworm, Bombyx mori fed the synthetic diet with different amounts of pyridoxine

Effects of vitamin B6 compounds on the larval growth and a distribution in the organs were studied. Raring by a pyridoxine-deficient diet remarkably decreased the vitamin B6 contents of the larvae, and the symptoms by vitamin B6 deficiency appeared. With the increase in pyridoxine content of diet, pyridoxine was accumulated, and the contents of pyridoxal and pyridoxamine remarkably increased in silkworm body. However, the contents of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate, both of which are the coenzyme forms of vitamin B6, did not change appreciably. It suggest that the pyridoxine accumulated in the larvae by the feeding of pyridoxine-rich diet was a storage form, and the pyridoxine did not play biological role by itself. It is assumed that pyridoxine absorbed from midgut, was first diffused in the hemolymph, then distributed to organs in active manner
