Influence of dietary by-products on milk production of dairy cows in early lactation

Effects of feeding by-products, such as tofu cake, brewer's grain and rice bran, on milk production of dairy cows in early lactating period were investigated. Five groups were set up. For HB1, MB and LB1 groups, diet containing 25%, 12.5% and 0% (as fed basis) of the mixture of dried brewer's grain and rice bran instead of flaked corn, and for HB2 and LB2 groups, diet containing 22% and 6%(as fed basis) of the mixture of dried brewer's grain and tofu cake instead of flaked corn and cotton seeds were given, respectively. TDN and CP in all diet were adjusted to 76~78% and 17%, respectively. Fourteen cows were fed experimental diets as the form of total mixed ratio freely from day 5 to day 110 postpartum. DMI showed no significant difference in each group, varied from 22.0 to 23.5 kg/day. Milk yields were 31.6, 32.7, 37.9, 39.8, and 40.2 kg/day for cows on treatment HB1, MB, LB2, LB1, and HB2, respectively. The maximum milk fat rate was observed in HB1 group as 4.1%, and minimum in LB1 as 3.5%. There was no significant difference in milk protein and milk lactose varying from 2.9 to 3.1% and from 4.4 to 4.6%, respectively. These results suggest, when the digestive characteristics of protein and starch in a diet are considered properly, such diet containing considerable amount of by-products help the dairy management to lower the feeding cost without declining the milk production
