We have previously shown that inorganic orthophosphate (Pi) uptake by Catharanthus roseus cells proceeds by a proton/Pi cotransport mechanism that acidifies the cytoplasm. In the present study,k we analyzed changes in the content of endogenous organic acids, carbon dioxide evolution, and oxygen consumption upon Pi application. The results are consistent with the operation of the biochemical pH-stat mechanism during and after Pi uptake
