Electron microscopic observations of cartilaginous lesions in osteochondrotic pigs

Ultrastructure of the cartilaginous lesions in osteochondrotic pigs was observed with a transmission electron microscope. Necrotic chondrocytes were present on resting chondrocytic layers, proliferative layers and hypertrophic layers of the osteochondrotic growth cartilage. These chondrocytes with the disintegration of a cell membrane, organelles and nuclei, appeared as labile, high electron dense masses. The low electron dense matrix was observed extensively around the necrotic chondrocytes. The high electron dense granules containing mucopolysaccharides decreased in the matrix. The amounts and direction of collagen fibers in the matrix did not differ from the normal cartilaginous matrix. Moreover, chondrocytes assembled and formed clusters between the normal and lesion areas of cartilage. The clusters consisted of 5-10 chondrocytes containg a few fatty droplets were observed in the cytoplasm of chondrocytes
