Effect of moisture stress at different growth stages on flowering and pod set in determinate and indeterminate soybean [Glycine max] cultivars

To elucidate the performance of flowering and pod set under water stress at different growth stages, cultivars Enrei (determinate) and Touzan 69 (indeterminate) were grown in Wagner pots under vinyl-house conditions during the year 1996. Water stress prolonged the flowering duration in each water stressed plot. Although, in Enrei, water stress at the pre-flowering stage decreased the number of nodes, flowers and pod set on the basal racemes, in Touzan 69, less flowers were compensated for by an increase in pod set on the upper racemes. In both cultivars, water stress at flowering and young pod stages depressed the number of flowers as well as pod set on the basal racemes, which ultimately resulted in less pods and yield. The later the stage of water stress treatment, the smaller the seed size, so yield was reduced more at the seed growth stage in both cultivars. The results revealed that water stress during the development of floral organs increased flower and pod abortion, and furthermore, many seeds were aborted due to water stress after the beginning of flowering. From late flowering to young pod stages, soybean cultivars are susceptible to sink abortion, and the seed growth stage is most critical for yield determination under water stress
