Performance and quality of corn hybrids grown in two meteorologically contrary years 1998 and 1999
2000
Gaile, Z. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Auce (Latvia). Research and Study Farm "Vecauce")
The aim of the present experiment carried out at the Research and Study Farm (RSF) "Vecauce" of Latvia University of Agriculture during 1998-1999 was to find out of there is a possibility to grow corn for silage in Latvia. That is not the traditional area for this field crop. Only early maturing hybrids from Europe and USA were used. The meteorological conditions in the two years of the trial were different. The year 1998 was cool and wet - unsuitable for corn, the year 1999 was dry and very warm, i.e. suitable. The yield of dry matter (DM) was similar in both years, but the soft dough stage of maturity was shown by all the hybrids only in 1999. The quality of corn hybrids including such parameters as the crude protein content, content of ash, Ca and P, dry matter intake, and NEL were also determined. The most suitable hybrids for local conditions were established.
