Economic assessment of the management of acid soils

An assessment of the ACIAR [Australian Center for International Agricultural Research]-funded research on the management of acid soils for sustained food crop production was conducted. The technology generated was corn-peanut rotation with the use of liming and other organic amendments. Findings showed that the cost of corn production before and after research was AU$363.14 and AU$544.33/ha, respectively. Source of increase was from the use of organic fertilizers and lime. Due to a 51% increase in yield after the research, the estimated cost/mt was lower at AU$256.76 compared to AU$259.38/mt before research, or a cost reduction of AU$2.65/mt. For peanut, the cost of production before research was AU$377.49 and AU$392.94 after research. The difference in cost was due mainly to the use of inoculant. The cost/mt of peanut produced was AU$547/08 and AU$545 before and after research, respectively. The cost reduction per metric ton of peanut produced was AU$1.33 or .24%. Using a 30-year time horizon, the net present value of the net welfare benefit (which is net of the research cost) was estimated to be AU$4.2M, and an internal rate of return of 35%
