2000

In mycoparasitized rust pustule caused by Puccinia polysora Underw., from 81 corn rust specimens collected in the Visayas and Mindanao [Philippines], Sphaerellopsis sp. was consistently observed and the level of mycoparasitism varied reaching 100% particularly in some corn farms in Leyte. Some Sphaerellopsis sp. isolates assayed in vitro inhibited the uredospore germination of P. polysora by 69 to 92%. In pot experiment, Sphaerellopsis sp. reduced the infection efficiency by P. polysora from 75-82% with the most virulent isolates. Uredospore production was reduced by 69% relative to the control using the D2 Sphaerellopsis sp. isolate. Sphaerellopsis sp. (D2) when applied once in the field significantly reduced rust severity from 46% to 25% or a mean efficacy of 45%. Consequently yield of dehusked green corn ears was increased from 4.688 ton/ha to 7.262 tons/ha
