Industrial utilization of by-products from rice and corn
1999
Anon.
This project aims to determine if the industrial application of primary and secondary by-products from palay and corn is technically and economically feasible. Initial activities determined the charring temperature of rice husk that characterize high carbon and low carbon material. An oven type carbon generator was fabricated to produce test carbon samples for use in the characterization of filtration property of high carbon rice hull. Preliminary tests using naturally activated rice husk carbon for color separation was successfully carried out. A simple gravity type filtration set-up was developed. Color separation test using hi-carbon filter media and test fluid (colored solution) showed that a complete color separation with 20 seconds filtration time is possible using 120 of weight of filter media. Comparative visual evaluation of filtrate was undertaken including the pre-testing which showed favorable results of effective filtration. Part of the project is the design of a suitable carbon generator that can be introduced together with the rice husk based water filter. Two prototype models, the portable type and field type carbon generators are currently being used to produce high carbon filter media for the target end-users
