Corn is a 27-billion peso industry that employs 30% of all Filipino farmers. Since 1990, total domestic corn production has declined by 21% while total hectarage devoted to corn has decreased by 38%. One of the major activities of the newly established Corn Research, Development, and Extension network is to put together all relevant information related to the development of the local corn industry. GIS [geographical information systems]-generated maps showing the latest 10-year regional, average corn productivity, demand, usage of high yielding and traditional varieties, and fertilizer use are presented. Initial results of locally-generated CERES and SUCROS corn simulation models are also included to illustrate yield gaps among potential yield, experimental station/attainable yield, and farmer's actual yield
