On-farm conservation - a case study in Infanta, Quezon [Philippines]

In order to learn about crop/variety diversity, patterns of adoption and loss of varieties and their underlying causes, the PGR 262 (Methods in Plant Genetic Resources Conservation) class set out a one-day study trip to Infanta, Quezon [Philippines]. This was done in coordination with a local farmer's group SALIKAMI. Data gathering was done through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and semi-structured interviews. Information gathered revealed the place as having high crop diversity and lower diversity at the infraspecific level. The rice fields were planted mostly to modern cultivars which were mostly foreign introductions. Cultivation of these modern rice varieties had caused the displacement of traditional varieties. Seed movement also appeared to be limited with planting materials obtained from nearby sources. Conservation of seeds was also not common since these were readily available. It was also found out that seed introductions caused genetic erosion. Conservation was accompanied primarily through utilization of germplasm and also their use as source materials for participatory crop improvement to a limited extent. Moreover, the process was also discovered to be necessity-driven where farmers only conserve varieties with characters deemed as desirable to the exclusion of others
