Genetic variation among 506 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (FOC) was analyzed by DNA fingerprinting. A total of 33 different genotypes were identified within FOC. Ninety four isolates of FOC and 12 isolates of F. oxysporum were also characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis of the intergenic space (IGS) region of the ribosomal DNA. Eighteen different IGS haplotypes were distinguised among the isolates of FOC, and 10 haplo types were distinguised among the isolates of F. oxysporum. Knowledge of the host range and geographical distribution of these genotypes within FOC may facilitate the selection of resistant banana cultivars for particular locations, depending on the endemic strains present
