Adaptation of cashew processing technologies in a selected cashew growing area
2000
Anon.
The study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of a cashew integrated processing enterprise in Limay, Bataan [Philippines]. A three-year cashew processing operation was analyzed and an investment analysis was made which revealed that the initial investment can be recovered within 2.49 years and with 40.16 percent return on investment. Adopting an integrated cashew processing enterprise is found economically viable. From the present practice of selling nuts, the enterprise has the potential of providing an additional income of P252,150.70 for a processing period of three months. This means a return of P1.67 for every peso invested. Through integrated processing, an additional income of P157,816.00 can be generated or a return of P2.04 for every peso invested. Whole kernel processing is a viable alternative. It can give a marginal net return of P2.02 and P3.62 for every peso invested when compared to selling nuts and split kernel processing, respectively. The cashew processing enterprise, on its first year of commercial operation, has brought about some socioeconomic changes in the community in the form of increased demand for local raw materials, change in the local marketing scenario, and generation of employment. Awareness of the economic value of the cashew products brought about a renewed attention to increase production by improving practices and/or planting more trees. Recommendations are made and presented to enhance the sustainability of the integrated cashew processing enterprise
