Impacts and sustainability of two community-based forest management projects as perceived by stakeholders in Region 2 [Cagayan Valley, Philippines]

The average total income of the respondents in both projects increased after the implementation of the project. The level of living of the respondents also increased due to the increase in income derived from the newly introduced farming system. People's participation in BUFAMCO [Balete Upland Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative, Nueva Vizcaya Province, Philippines] sharply increased, whereas in SMCO [Salindingan Multipurpose Cooperative, Isabela Province, Philippines] all the respondents were not involved in developmental activities due to low inputs from the project. Many forest species were introduced by the project and the number of fruit trees increased (numerously) after the project. Various soil and water conservation structures such as contour farming, terracing, and SALT [sloping agricultural land technology], were practised as a result of the project. However, the farmers' perception did not provide concrete conclusion about increase in land productivity. Instead, the increased practice of mulching, composting, crop rotation; the introduction of soil and water conservation structures; different agroforestry practices; and the difference in CSC [certificate of stewardship contract] areas compared to other surrounding areas indicate the increase in productivity of the land. All the respondents indicated that the CSC is acceptable to them and majority expressed that the project boosted up the indigenous farming system. Most of the forest trees and commercially grown vegetables were introduced as a result of the project and the number of fruit species, livestock and birds also increased after the project. Most of the respondents practised agroforestry in their CSC areas after the project, indicating the existence of a productive farming systems
