Effects of different eyestalk ablation methods on the fattening of mud crabs (Scylla sp.) in floating bamboo cages

Effects of two eyestalk ablation (cutting and tying) methods on mud crab fattening were compared based on survival, gonad development and weight gain. Ninety post-molt crabs were gouped into three set-ups, namely Group A (ablated by cutting), Group B (ablated by tying or ligation) and Group C (control group). For 28 d, they were kept in floating bamboo cages and fed with trash fish at the rate of 10% per body weight. Gonad development and weight gain were monitored once a week. Gonad development was quantitatively classified based on the amount of gonads which filled the crab's abdomen. Gonad quality was, thus, classified into full, partial or empty. Results showed that survival rate was lowest in Group A (40%). Groups B and C had a survival rate of 70%. In terms of gonad development, 57% in Group B were classified as full, and 37% in Group A and 10% in Group C. F-test indicated that differences in weight gain were significant
