Histology of the spleen of Philippine carabao (Bubalus bubalis L.)

The spleen of adult male Philippine carabao (Bubalus bubalis L.) was examined histologically using the H & E stain. The carabao had a storage type of spleen characterized by the presence of numerous trabeculae and minimal amount of white pulp in the parenchyma. It was enclosed by a thick capsule consisting of two distinct layers: a thick outer dense white fibrous connective tissue layer (DWFCT) and an inner smooth muscle layer. The white pulp was made up of the lymphatic nodule and periarterial sheath that surrounded the nodular or central arteriole. The red pulp or splenic cord consisted of lymphocytes, phagocytic cells and erythrocytes separated by sinuses
