Ahmed, Q.B.
A Survey was carried out in 1994 in order to find out the production and marketing constraints of Date Palm in Turbat District of Makran Division, Balochistan. Random sampling technique was used in the selection of 100 rate growers from 51villages in various tehsils and sub-tehsils. The survey was conducted by personal interview with date growers and by questionnaire. The survey team consisted of an interdisciplinary team, from social Sciences. Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant protection and Agriculture Extension. In production constraints, pollination in date palms was found as major problem. The date growers do not practice the recommended ratio of male and female plants in their orchard which is due to limited knowledge of farmers on male and female ratio. It is also found in many date orchards that plant to plant and row to row distance was not as per recommendation. The growers have no knowledge of proper fertilizer application and its benefits to lates production. However, they apply fertilizer to all the crops when incorporated with date palms. Major losses to date fruits were reported during post harvest handling and storage. All the phases of date production in the area is at still traditional and conventional The farmers are un-aware of modern date fruits production. Marketing constraints as reported by the growers, is directly associated with absence of farm to market roads. The major markets of dates are big cities of the country, which are too far from the date producing districts of Makran Division. As reported by the farmers that a huge amount of dates are being lost during transportation. Several improvements have been suggested for production and marketing of dates so that hard working farmers of the area should get more benefits and rewards than a middlemen
