Effect of seeding density and genotypes on sorghum leaves per plant and grain yield under rainfed conditions

Genotype and seed rate are the most important factor affecting leaves per plant, thousand grains weight and grain yield of sorghum under rainfed conditions. The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate four sorghum genotypes (Giza-3, D.G. pearl, D.S.75 and J. S. S.63) and four seed rates (10, 20, 30 and 40 Kg per hectare) for grain yield and other parameters under rainfed conditions at Agricultural Research Station Serai Naurang (Bannu) during 1987. Th experiment was laid out according to randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement having genotypes in main plots and seed rate in sub-plots. Sorghum genotype D.G. Pearl produced maximum grain yield of 1187.50 kg/ha followed by variety J.S.S.63 producing 747 kg/ha. Number of plants increased with each increment of seed rate and maximum plants/m2 were recorded at 40 kg/ha. However leaves per plant thousand grains weight and grain yield showed inverse relationship with seed rate.
