Nutritional factors play a key role in etiopathogenesis of chronic non-communicable diseases, which are the leading cause of mortality and high morbidity in developed countries. In this paper results of recent epidemiological survey of food habits of the adult population of the Slovak Republic are presented. Analysis of dietary data shows that protein intake exceeds recommendations (males 134.9% of RDA, females 123.1%), on the opposite carbohydrate consumption is decreased (70% of RDA). Fat intake is excessive both in males (126.3% of RDA) and females (112.8%). Moreover, the fatty acid content is imbalanced, saturated fatty acids prevail, but also the intake of unsaturated linoleic acid approaches the upper limit of acceptable values. On the opposite, a-linolenic acid content in food is low. Dietary fibre intake is by 30% lower than the RDA in males and by 20% in females. Calcium, zinc and copper intake does not meet the RDA
