Effect of rhizobium inoculation and nitrogen fertilizer rates on growth and nitrogen fixation of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek; var. Kamphaengsaen I

Experiment was conducted at Faculty of Agriculture, Rajamangala Institute of Technology, Sriracha, Chonburi province, during August 1996 and January 1997. Treatments were arranged in Split plot in RCB with 4 replications. The main plots were Rhizobium inoculation and uninoculation, the sub plots were 5 rates of nitrogen fertilizer: 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 kg N/rai/. The mungbean variety Kamphaengsaen I and urea fertilizer were used in experiment. The objective of experiment was to determine the influence of Rhizobium inoculation and nitrogen fertilizer rates on different attributes especially nitrogen fixation and yield of mungbean. The results revealed that Rhizobium inoculation was superior to uninoculation in plant height, number of pods/plant, seed yield, number of nodules/plant, nodules dry weight and nitrogen fixation at R3 stage. Rhizobium inoculation gave seed yield higher than uninoculation (216 and 172 kg/rai respectively). However, the application of nitrogen fertilizer rates did not increase the nitrogen fixation and seed yield and the difference between treatments were not statistically detected.
