Effects of multiple leaflet gene on physiological and agronomical characters of mungbean

Near-isogenic lines of mungbean were produced by backcrossing between KPS 1 and CN 36 with the multiple leaflet line, V 5926 until BC7 and BC9. The isogenic lines were evaluated against the 2 recipients at the experimental field of the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC). Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen, Nakhon Pathom Province in rainy season 1994 and dry season 1995. The effect of gene controlling multiple leaflet on physiological and agronomical charactter was investigated. Agronomically, seed yield, plant height, and number of pods per plant were higher in the trifoliate leaflet cultivars than in the near-isogenic lines, whereas number of seeds per pod and 1000 seed weight were not significantly differnt. Physiologically, the photosynthetic rate was significantly indifferent. Light interception and dry matter accumulation were higher in the trifoliate leaflet cultivars than those of the multifoliate lines. Leaf area index (LAI) at the vegetative stage was higher in the trifoliate but lower at flowering and young pod stages, due to higher number of leaflet per plant of the multifoliate. After that, LAI of the multifoliate was lower as the number of leaflet per plant was constant but increasing in the trifoliate lines. After R2 stage LAI of the multifoliate lines was lower than that of the normal trifoliate lines, as the number of leaflet per plant was rather constant while that of the latter lines increased. Significant correlation was found between seed yields and number of pods per plant, light interception, LAI and dry matter accumulation, with the coefficient of determination (R*[2)) of 97.7 and 73.2 percent for the trifoliate and multiple leaflet cultivars, respectively.
