Ecology and population dynamics of Acanthoscelides spp. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) in Mimosa pigra L. infested area of Phitsanulok, Thailand
1998
Yanyong Chalearmsan
Acanthoscelides puniceus Johnson and A. quadridentatus (Schaeffer) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) were introduced into Thailand in 1983 to control the giant sensitive plant, Mimosa pigra L., which is a serious weed of wetland of agriculture and conservation areas in Southeast Asia and Australia. Studies in population dynamics and evaluation on the effectiveness of Acanthoscelides spp. were done in five infested areas in Phisanulok. The result showed 48.32 percent of M. pigra seed were destroyed by Acanthoscelides spp. Emergence of bruchid adults from M. pigra seeds was high January-June which is effected by the availability of M. pigra flower heads and pods in the previous four-months. Major ecological factor affecting the establishment and the development of Acanthoscelides spp. was temperature with slope of the regression line = 22.88. However, continuous release of Acanthoscelides spp. should be done to enhance the biological control of Mimosa pigra.
