Potential crop productivity of acid sulfate/peat soils of Thailand

Study the effect of lime, copper and mineral soil dressing on the yield of rice on the peat soil. The results revealed that lime and copper increased grain yield of rice markedly, while percentage of unfilled grain decreased appreciably. The 15 and 7.5 cm thick of mineral soil dressing gave the first and second rank of grain yield respectively. Copper had more pronounced effect on grain yield of rice when compared to zinc and boron. The mineral soil dressing gave the highest grain yield and lowest percentage of unfilled grain. Sufficient amount of lime and adequate amount of copper should be applied for higher grain yield and preventing copper toxicity. It also showed that the p-hydroxybenzoic acid and the percentage of unfilled grain were decreased by copper application. Copper and molybdenum on the peat soil had the beneficial effect on the growth of rice. Decomposition of organic matter in term of CO2 evolution was in the sequent of air dried, saturated and submerged soils condition. This was true both for the decomposition at 25 and 40 deg C for the unlimed treatments. In contrast, when lime was applied to the soil, the decomposition of organic matter at 25 deg C was in the sequent of submerged, saturated and air dried soil condition. The reverse was true for the decomposition at 40 deg C. Study the availability of rock phosphate in acid sulfate soils. The results showed that rock phosphate increased the pH of the soil. With the exception of Rangsit soil, the grain yield of rice of Rangsit very acid, Sena and Bangkok soils increased with the increase of rock phosphate application rate. The NPK uptake of rice also increased. Less pronounced effect of applied phosphate application on Rangsit soil when compared to the other soils should be due to rather high content of available P in this soil. Study the effect of lime and proportion of rock phosphate and triple superphosphate on the grain yield of rice in Rangsit very acid soil. The results showed that phosphate fertilization was necessary. It was also found that sources of phosphate fertilizer should be taken into consideration when lime was applied. When the pH of the soil was about 4.5, rock phosphate would be more suitable. When the pH of the soil is higher than 4.5, triple superphosphate would be more efficient.
