[Effect of planting density and nitrogen fertilizer application on yields of corn planting in black clay soil]

Result showed that the heights of corn plants at 30 days after emergence were significantly different among the treatments. The application of nitrogen fertilizer gave a highly significant difference in the plant height at 60 days after emergence. The corn plants with N application were taller than those without N. The rates on N, however did not gave any significant difference in the height of corns during 30-60 days after emergence. On the other hand, the corn plants with 21,000 plants/rai were shorter than those with lower plant densities. In addition, N treatments resulted in relatively bigger corn stalks than those without N. But the corn produced proportionally smaller stalks when grown in the densities of 8,500, 11,000 and 21,000 plants/rai respectively. There were significant difference in the plant lodging percentages among the treatments. The application of N fertilizer at 15 kg/rai or higher gave higher percentages of lodging than that of lower rates. The plant density of 21,000 plants/rai resulted in the highest plant lodging to 36.3 percents. Furthermore, N application at 15 kg/rai in conjunction with the plant density of 21,000 plants/rai gave the lodging of 57.3 percents. The highest grain yield was obtained from the treatment with 15 kg/rai, but there was no significant difference in the yield among the N fertilizer rates. The grain yield was lower when the plant population was higher because the lodging percentage of corn plants was also higher. In conclusion, the optimal corn plant population was 11,000 plants/rai.
