Microanatomy of the optic ganglia of Penaeus monodon Fabricius was examined by reconstruction from stained serial sections. There are four optic ganglia arranged in a consecutive manner: a distal lamina ganglionaris followed by medulla externis, medulla internis, and medulla terminalis. Typically, the major components of ganglia are present: cell rind, neurosecretory cells, blood sinuses and glial cells. The optic ganglia neurosecretory cells are distinguishable into six types based on size, location and presence of secretory material in the perikaryon. They are found within each of the ganglia, except in the lamina ganglionaris. They are collected in to ganglionic X-organs in the other three ganglia: three medulla externis X-organ groups (MEX1, MEX2, MEX3), one medulla internis X-organ group (MIX), and two medulla terminalis X-organ groups (MTGX1 and MTGX2). All ganglionic X-organ groups send their combined fiber tracts into the sinus gland. The MEX1 group send its fiber tract into the lamina ganglionaris. The common crustacean eyestalk structure, the organ of Bellonci, is wholly contained within the dorsal surface of the medulla terminalis. It is a group of onion body cells.
