Ultrastructure of the sublingual gland in sheep (Ovis aries)

Structure of the sheep sublingual gland was studied by light and electron microscopy. The glands were removed from sheep that had been fasted for 20 hours and after being perfused with a half-strength Karnovsky's fixative. Paraffin sections (5 micro m-thick) showed that their secretory endpieces are composed of tubulo-acini which contain strongly PAS-positive granules and some demilunes. The duct system includes intercalated duct, conspicuous striated ducts and excretory ducts. Goblet cells are frequently seen in the excretory duct epithelium. Ultrastructurally, the mucous acinar cells contain characteristically mucous granules of electron-lucent matrix, whereas the secretory granules of the serous demilune are small, moderately electron-dense and homogenous. Non-myelinated nerve terminals are commonly observed around the secretory endpieces. The intra-acinar axons are also found occasionally in direct contact with the plasma membranes of the myoepithelial cell and acinar cells.
