Change in properties of pond bottom soil of Penaeus monodon Fabricius in the Inner Gulf of Thailand

Studies on the change in properties of bottom soil of shrimp (Penaeus monodon) ponds in the Inner Gulf of Thailand were conducted by comparing with old soil that is not affected by shrimp culture activity. The study was done in different age groups of shrimp pond either still culturing shrimp (5, 6, and 7 years old) or being abandoned (stop using for 3, 5, and 6 years) due to mass mortality problems. Result of this study indicated significant (P0.05) change in some soil properties comparing to the old soils. In shrimp ponds that still culturing shrimp, the accumulation of calcium was found in every age groups of culturing ponds. Accumulation of phosphorus was also found in 5 years old ponds and significantly increased in soil BOD5 was found in 7 years old ponds. The seven years old pond had lower ammonium-nitrogen content in bottom soil than the old soil. In ponds that were abandoned, significantly higher BOD5 values of pond bottom soil were found comparing to the old soil in all age groups. Bottom soil of ponds that were left empty for 5 and 6 years had significantly higher amount of ammonium-nitrogen, organic matter, iron, manganese and copper than those of the old soil. The accumulation of zinc and potassium were found in bottom soil of ponds which were left empty for 6 years.
