Effect of insecticide, fungicide and polyethylene-glycol on corn seed germination, Suwan 5 variety

Seed treatments were studied in order to sustain seed quality in storage. Four rates of pirimiphos-methyl 50 percent wv. insecticide, .025, .035, .045 and .055 ml/kg seed and 4 rates of polyethylene-glycol 400, coating medium, .025, .050, .075 and .100 ml/1 kg seed and captan 50 percent wp, fungicide, 1g/1kg seed were employed. Suwan 5 seed from seed production plot of the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center were treated in accordance with the tested rates. Experiment Laid out in RCB design with 4 replications included 17 treatments. Germination were tested by between paper method for 12 consecutive months, from January to December 1994. The germination test revealed that .035 ml pirimiphos-methyl and .025 ml polyethylene glycol gave the best seed quality after 12 months storage, followed by .025: .100, .035: .050 and .035: .075 of pirimiphos-methyl: polyethylene-glycol, respectively. Un-treated seed gave high germination, higher than 90 percent, only in the first 7 months. Seed germination declined continuously to 78.00 percent in December.
