Study on protein and lipid digestibility of different processed soybean meal in diets for juvenile seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch)

Fish fed with diet containing solvent extracted soybean meal showed the best growth. However, growth of fish fed with this diet was not highly significant different from fish fed with diets containing extruded soybean meal and steamed soybean meal. But fish fed with diet containing soaked soybean meal resulted lower growth and lower survival with highly significant different than the other test diets. Protein and lipid digestibility of different processed soybean meal in diets for juvenile Seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), was studied for 10 weeks. The apparent digestibility of protein in diets containing extruded soybean meal, solvent extracted soybean meal, steamed soybean meal and soaked soybean meal were 92.26, 94.24, 94.40 and 73.70 percent, respectively. The apparent digestibility of lipid in the test diets were 88.06, 87.84, 89.31 and 75.71 percent, respectively. Fish fed with diet containing soaked soybean meal showed some histological changes of gastro-intestinal system, e.g. atrophy of hepatocyte, the lower number of zymogen granule, atrophy of gastric gland cell and local necrosis of gastric cell. Fish fed with other test diets showed normal histology.
