[New initial material as the background for plant breeding of highly heterosis maize hybrids]
2000
Zhemoyida, V.L.
The problem is studied of selecting initial material to create fast-ripening self-pollinated lines that would possess the following properties: in the course of several generations do not face depression of minor importance according to the quantity of traits, will retain high crop yield, with the disease and pest resistance, and combination ability. A great number of native and foreign hybrids has been used. The data is provided on the number of the lines and hybrids under self-pollination in order to obtain new self-pollinated lines. The work was carried in the lines as follows: the strict pollination of the initial material over 3-4 years; selection among progeny of individuals which at transition into homozygotous condition kept their main morphological and biological as well as biological and economically valuable traits almost without depression. Among almost 2000 specimens there have been chosen several dozens ones with comparatively short vegetation period. Several self-pollinated specimens are isolated that meet the requirements of the short-ripening crops and have been distinguished by high crop yield and combination abilities. The isolated self-pollinated lines are recommended for use in breeding practice
