Corn mint (Mentha arvensis L.), as a species from the Mentha genus may be either menthonic, mentholic, carvon/dihydrocarvon, pulegonic, menthofuranic, and cariophilenic chemotype. Menthol chemotype contains the highest percent of (-)-menthol (30-80%). To make assessment of the quality of the drug, essential oil, and extract, it is necessary to have a reliable analytical method for the determination of important components, primarily of the dominant ones. In the frame of this work a spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of (-)-menthol, using rho-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde as a colouring reagent. Statistical treatment of the experimental results showed that this method is characterized by a high reproducibility and precision of determination. The developed procedure was used to determine the content of (-)-methol in the essential oil and extracts obtained by the extraction of leaves of corn mint with carbon dioxide under supercritical conditions.
