Endoparasitoses in urban cats and dogs

The subject of this study was carpological investigation of feces of pets (cats and dogs) which live in an urban environment. There was used of pets maintained in households and of cats and dogs from two asylums where strays and animals rejected by their owners are brought. The examination of the material showed the presence of different types of endoparasites. There were determined the presence of parasite eggs of Ankilostomatidae (Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum), Ascarididae (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), Trichuris vulpis and Taeniae spp. The presence of the same endoparasites was established in both groups of animals, but in a smaller percentage in pets than in stray animals. The results indicate that there are possibilities for permanent circulation of parasites between pets and stray animals, and for a threat to people in urban areas of infections with endoparasites which can affect their health (toxocarosa, echinococcosis). Regarding this problem, special emphasis could be placed on informing the population, in particular those who decide keep pets.
