Influence of cut, dry matter level and formic acid on microflora in lucerne silage

Unwilted and wilted lucerne herbage from the first and second cut were conserved by method of ensiling without and with formic acid at 5 l/t concentration and were opened after 3rd, 7th, 21st and 42nd days. Number of lactobacteria (Lactobacillus sp.) and streptococcus (Streptococcus sp.) in lucerne silages from 1st cut increase from 3rd to 7th and in some treatments to 21st day and then decrease. In silage from 2nd cut maximum number of lactobacteria was achieved in 3rd day after ensiling (faster grow) and then number decrease. Streptococcus faecalis species is predominant in Streptococcus genera at the beginning of fermentation in silages without conservator. Number of analyzed microorganisms, dry matter content and pH increase with herbage wilting. Use of formic acid had bacteriostatic action on examined microorganisms and sometimes even bactericide and contribute to pH decrease, i.e. increase forage quality.
