Experiments were conducted at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Serbia, Yugoslavia) in the period 1996-1998. Considered from the point of rainfall amounts and distribution, this period was favourable for field crop production. The rainfall sums in vegetative periods in the three years were 488, 425 and 490 mm, respectively. Because of the high amounts of rainfall, the effect of irrigation could not be fully expressed. Ample rainfall allowed high yields of dry matter, 11.82 t/ha on averagge, to be obtained without irrigation. In the respective irrigation variant, the yields were 14.36 t/ha. The increases in dry matter yield in relation to the control ranged from 6 to 27%, average 22%. The yields of green forage with and without irrigation were 60 t/ha, and the average increase brought by irrigation was 23%. Soil moisture was regularly monitored throughout the experimental period, for determinations of evapotranspiration. The three-year average values of evapotranspiration with and without irrigation were 680 and 560 mm, respectively. The lower stand density increased the yield of alfalfa in irrigation by 6%, while the higher density in the variant without irrigation increased the yield by 3%.
