The organic ("bitumen") fraction content was determined in samples of the "Barje" water reservoir sediments (Serbia, Yugoslavia). A classical organic-geochemical method for sediment analysis was applied: Soxhlet extraction was applied for the isolation and determination of the "bitumen" fraction; the group content was determined by column chromatography and the isolated alkaline fraction was analyzed by GC analysis. On the basis of group composition results, as well as on the basis of the distribution of n-alkaline homologues it was concluded that the examined sediments represent unpolluted environmental samples, at least as far as oil-type pollutants are concerned.
