Automatic milking systems (AMS) have been installed on commercial farms at an increasing rate in recent years. Since the introduction of the milking machine, no other technique has aroused so much interest and expectation within dairy farming. Reduced labour demand and a better social life for dairy producers are the very attracting benefits of AMS. Improved milk quality, animal health and welfare, and increased milk yields are other potential benefits. In this paper these factors are discussed in relation to cow traffic management, milking, milking hygiene, milk handling and herd management. The milking process and the effects on milk quality and udder health are given particular attention. Certainly, the AMS are continuously being investigated and further developed. Meanwhile, the present AMS have to be improved in a number of respects to assure milk of consistent high quality and the health of the cows. The milking equipment, including functions for cleaning teats, pre-milking and stimulation of milk ejection should be investigated and, if necessary, further improved. There are not yet sufficient effective methods available to monitor characteristics of milk automatically as a basis for diverting milk from unhealthy cows. Studies on milk quality indicate that attention should also be paid to the techniques used for the cleaning of milking equipment and the cooling of milk. Proper management of cows is essential to exploit fully the advantages of AMS
