Studies on the distribution and epizootiology of the Bluetongue disease in ruminants in Bulgaria

The epizootic outbreak of the Bluetongue disease in ruminants was revealed in Bulgaria in the summer of 1999 (from June-October). Its basedc characteristic was the clearly expressed summer seasonality and the revelation of three tenacity picks of the epizootiological situation, corresponding to the periods of active flight and development of the Culicoides, carriers of the Sp. Culicuides, and the phases of growth of their offspring (June, July-August and October). 85 settlements with 41721 sheep were affected and the dropped animals were 667 in number. On the basis of the permanent entomological monitoring of the culicuides' content at the foci of active disease percolation, in the zones with indicator animals C. Imicola was not found. Dominating in the culicuides' collections, in the active foci, as well as in the sentinel zones were C. Obsoletus, C. Punctatus and C. Pulicaris.
