Study on the posibilities of penetration of african horse sickness virus and on the changes in Culicoides species in Bulgaria

African horse sickness (AHS) is a contagious disease in domestic and wild solidungular animals which is transmitted mainly by insects. The disease is characterized with high temperature, cough, oedematose of head, neck, torax and lungs, as well as hydrotorax and hydropericardium. The mortality in the cases of lack of vaccination is great (90%). Using epizootological and serological methods the situation in respect of penetration of the virus of AHS was studied and attempts to establish the changes in Culicoides composition were done. It was established that C. imicola was not available. For the first time in Bulgaria the presence of C. punctatus, C. subfascipennis, C. circumscriptus and C. nubeculosum, transfering directly the AHS virus among the solid-hoofed population was proved. Serological investigation of blood sera from animals in border regions during the active period of Culicoides flying by ELISA were carried out. The results obtained showed that antibodies against AHS virus were not detected.
