Comparison of mathematical models of the "corn yield-plant density" relation

A comparison among four statistical models belonging to the same family has been made, describing "yield-plant density" relationship. For this purpose data from a three year field experiment with corn conducted in 8 different soil families (hybrid H 708), were used. Five levels of water and nitrogen combinations were used. In most cases the four models approximate the data equally well. The assessments of the optimal density are quite different although the maximal yields estimated for them are very close in value. It is difficult to find only one model suitable for all possible conditions in the country. The choice of such a model belonging to a wider class of models, can be only dominantly preferable.
